The Rock Bridge Bruins featured a decidedly different look at Faurot Field in Friday’s annual Providence Bowl.
Several of their jerseys were stolen or lost before they fell 41-7 to the Hickman Kewpies, who moved to 8-4 all-time against Rock Bridge.
Rock Bridge coach A.J. Ofodile recently found out the jerseys were missing and the team had to play musical jerseys before the game.
Their play seemed just as confused. The Bruins continued a recent trend of bad games, which included missed blocking assignments and missed reads.
“It’s Groundhog’s Day,” Bruins coach A.J. Ofodile said, referring to the movie. “Week in, week out, we do the right thing in practice. We do the opposite in the game.”
Kewpie quarterback Matt Herman provided his best game of the season. He threw for two touchdowns and added two more on the ground.
Hickman scored first on an 18-yard pass to sophomore Wesley Leftwich with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter. Herman then added his two rushing touchdowns to put the Kewpies ahead, 21-0.
Josh Williams added two more rushing touchdowns for Hickman. His 29-yard rush in the third quarter gave the Kewpies a 34-0 lead and represented the first score for Hickman in the third quarter this season.
He also added a 4-yard rushing touchdown for the Kewpies with 3:51 remaining in the game.
Chase Baxter caught a 24-yard pass with 31 seconds remaining in the second quarter for Hickman.
Jaimonte Cooper provided the majority of the Bruins’ offense. He rushed for 26 yards in the first half, while the remainder of the Bruins combined for two yards of offense.
The Bruins compiled 96 rushing yards as a team for the entire game.
Cooper also provided Rock Bridge’s sole touchdown, a 22-yard rush with 10:34 remaining in the game. Cooper, who found himself back in the running back rotation after not receiving a carry last week, leads the team with three rushing touchdowns.
Both teams are scheduled to face tougher opponents next week, as they host state-ranked teams at 7 p.m.
Hickman plays Rock Hurst, which is the No. 2 Class 6A team. Rock Bridge faces Helias, the No. 5 Class 4A team.
