Woman charged with death of her boyfriend’s 2-year-old son

DE SOTO, Mo. — A 23-year-old woman faces charges in the death of her boyfriend’s 2-year-old son.

Brandy Jean Mabery was arrested and charged on Tuesday in the death of Stacey Tolbert-Wyatt of De Soto. The boy was not breathing at his home in De Soto on Monday morning. Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.

Mabery is charged with felony abuse of a child resulting in death and armed criminal action. Prosecutors say the boy was struck with a stick. Autopsy results showed several bruises over the child’s body.

The father, Stacey Tolbert, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Police believe he failed to report the abuse.

A 1-year-old child was taken from the home and placed in protective custody.
