In time for Veterans Day, we spoke to Kristina Cross, 25, who enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2001 and has been deployed to Qatar (2003), Kuwait (2003), Fort Leonard Wood (2005) and Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (2005). She now works at the Raynor Columbia Armory for the Missouri National Guard.
Why did you join the Army?
I always wanted to be in the military as a kid. One of my dad’s photos from Vietnam was always hanging in our house, and we visited a lot of bases on vacations. My dad actually tried to talk me out of joining, but I was robbed at gunpoint at a Subway shop my senior year in high school and wanted to be in the military police.
Describe a typical day of basic training?
Long. There were a lot of exciting times in basic, but I wouldn’t go back.
How do you unwind?
I like to watch movies.
Describe your generation.
We have a lot more opportunity to succeed and provide our children with the things our parents might not have been able to.
What inspires you?
Music. Recently I’ve been listening to the country song “Cleaning This Gun.” I can just see my husband listening to that song over and over again when his daughter is old enough to date.
What’s the best thing about living in the United States?
Showers and flushing toilets.
